Prerequisite: ENMT 301. A study of the principles of health and safety management in the workplace. The objective is to evaluate occupational hazards and formulate strategies to control occupational health and safety hazards and minimize injury. Topics include anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational hazards. The strategies used by industrial hygienists and safety professionals to prevent or minimize the exposure to occupational hazards are explored. Discussion also covers the role of regulatory processes in occupational health and safety management.

(Required within the first 6 credits of graduate study for all new graduate students, except MBA students). An overview of the skills needed for academic and professional success. Focus is on enhancing communication and critical thinking skills. Assignments provide familiarity with tools such as social media and library and information resources. (Not open to students who have completed MATH 140 or any course for which MATH 140 is a prerequisite.) Prerequisite: MATH 012 or an appropriate result on the placement test. An explication of equations, functions, and graphs. The goal is to demonstrate fluency in pre-calculus; communicate mathematical ideas appropriately; solve equations and inequalities; analyze and graph functions; and use mathematical modeling to translate, solve, and interpret applied problems. Topics include polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry, and analytical geometry. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: MATH 107, MATH 108, or MATH 115.

With the current global media circuits and the immediacy of information pouring in through the internet, email, and smart phones, we are more aware then ever of the ecological consequences of natural and anthropogenic disasters. In recent years we have been presented with the consequences of engineering design in Hurricane Katrina; drought and irrigation needs in the US west; an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico after the loss of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform; the implications of urban living in the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand; and the double implications of living in an active earthquake zone and following tsunami in Japan involving massive loss of human life and radiation exposure. And, on a more national or local scale we have heard about solar farms replacing desert habitat in the southwest, implications of an offshore wind farm on Cape Cod . . . What other situation have you heard about involving the ecological consequences of natural or anthropogenic activities?, what are the ethical challenges of the ecological consequences of these incidents? Select one incident or situation. Explain it, and then present your well-developed thoughts on the topic. The aim is to identify an information need and locate, evaluate, and use appropriate resources in keeping with academic integrity and ethical standards. Focus is on implementing effective strategies for finding relevant information--including selecting appropriate print and electronic sources and effectively using web search engines and UMUC Information and Library Services' electronic resources to find information--and evaluating and correctly citing the information found. Students may not earn credit for LIBS 150 through challenge exam or portfolio credit and may receive credit for only one of the following courses: COMP 111, LIBS 100, or LIBS 150.
