On Wednesday lunch (9 March 2016), Year 10 students were invited to listen to Dr Gilbert Bond from Yale University talk to us about his and his family’s experiences of growing up in the same setting and era as the novel we are studying for English – To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM) by Harper Lee – from the perspective of a person of colour. In his warm American accent, we listened to his stories that provided a method to the madness of the bigoted ways of early Southern American society we have been learning in our research, from explaining the society’s reasons through what values it had and its pyramid structure, to explaining why it is Southerners speak in the iconic Southern accent.
